Gallery Visit
I went with my friend to a Lucian Freud exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery. I really like the faces he drew. Specifically the ones where the face has a reflection or it’s incomplete or partly hidden by a big leaf.
I photographed the drawings I thought represented the absence and presence brief.
Research and development
I love face makeup and I knew I wanted to create two very different styles to represent absence and presence. I wanted to try lots of different designs and I managed to create a few for absence but having to keep removing the makeup every time was making my skin sore, so I drew out a face template and printed it out lots of times, then I was able to do as many designs as I wanted, and quickly, without making my skin sore.
Makeup trials
I concentrated on black and white makeup for absence and brighter colours like pink and red for presence. I experimented with two different looks at once and tried out stencils and swirls. Although this process didn’t go as planned and I ended up doing two completely different looks for my final artwork.
